Stuff Lesbians Like Part 15: ProcessingBy Grace Yip |
No, not paperwork. We’re talking about talking. And talking. And then maybe some MORE TALKING.
Lesbians going through issues in any relationship (friends, lovers, mom) like to process. This verb usage exists solely in the lesbian vernacular and is perhaps a by-product of all that time in graduate school. If one spends the better part of their lives entrenched in Huarorani culture, wrapped in multiplicative ergodic theorem, or being subjected to the Socratic method, our lezzie can’t help but become an expert in analyzing, dispelling, and proving.
Ever notice how you are always confused about whether those two friends of yours are still dating or not? Or that they are “breaking up” but it takes upwards of 8 months (some, 8 years) to actually break up? Or why you have so much anger or resentment towards a family member or a friend but you still continue to “work” on it? One word. Processing.
We can all name examples – and because The L Word Season 5 finale is still branded into the folds of my brain, I predict a few of characters will go through a lot of processing in Season 6 – like Alice and Angelica (mommies, what’s a daddy?). Oh and of course, Shane. And I hope and pray that the producers will let this character process for once instead of drowning herself in sex/drugs/that-woe-as-me-pout.
Talk it out. Work It Out. Or if all fails, do what everyone else is doing.
