Stuff Lesbians Like Part 26: We blog!By Grace Rosen |
I would love to think that our sites GracetheSpot.com and StuffLesbiansLike.com are breaking into uncharted territory but let’s get realistic … we’re just in the same rat pack as everyone else … even in the small lesbian niche. According to the Advocate.com, lesbians and our gay brothers view, comment, and write on blogs more than our straight counterparts.
“As far as blog subject matter, 28% of LGBT respondents said that they read news blogs, 26% read entertainment blogs, and 23% follow political blogs. In comparison, 19% of heterosexual Web users read news sites, 11% read entertainment blogs, and 14% read political blogs. “
So the stats got me thinking. What can explain the numbers? I came up with some theories …
- We follow the pulse of pop culture, the topic of many blogs, so naturally we trip on blog sites more often. As well as reading obscure texts, we read PerezHilton. (Don’t deny it.)
- Even though the LGBT community flocks to cities to reside, some LGBTs don’t have the means to escape to a friendly place like NYC. However, even the towns with a population of 100 have managed to get internet access. Blogging provides an outlet for those who may be stuck in places like Real Bitch Island a la queer web celeb Chris Crocker, and although we lezzies are above sobbing on YouTube demanding that Britney Spears be left alone, we are not above polluting the blogosphere with our sordid dating drama. (See #10)
- LGBTs also flock to media and communications courses, because not only do we like to know anything and everything going on around us, we must also understand every medium by which we our nosiness propagates.
- Since LGBT topics are definitely in the minority in mainstream media , when we come across such topics close to our hearts, we keep faithful and return regularly (hint hint).
- I’d say that lesbians are more educated on the whole, so more of us are exposed to the power of the Web and Blogs. That statement has no statistical backing. I’m just stating an opinion based on a compilation of observations. As Chu already pointed out lesbians like higher education and we like to show off all that book learnin’.
- Many blogs, especially the entertainment ones, are all about gossip and us much as we deny it, we love gossip!
- Lesbians are uncommonly opinionated, so it makes sense that many of us blog.
- Perhaps we have more time on our hands since percentage wise our community has fewer kids than those of our counterparts. Again no stats, but I think that’s a safe assumption to make!
- And of course, as it was pointed out before, lesbians like processing. Blogging is the perfect way of parsing through all of those complex emotions, and – bonus! – the comments section provides an avenue to collect free advice. Since lesbians are also cheap, this means free therapy!
- Finally, when all other methods fail, lesbians can publicly shame someone to stop stalking them.
What are your hypotheses?

I think you hit the nail on the head … we’re smarter, have a lot to say and can say it better than many of our straight counter-parts. There, I said it … we’re just cooler. I am gay, therefor I blog.

Don’t forget, blogging also helps us connect with lesbians all over the world, thus proving how linguistically talented we are…
