Breaking News! ABC political commentator acknowledges that Hawaii is a state!

By Grace Chu

Media Matters reports:

On the August 10 edition of ABC’s This Week, ABC News political analyst Cokie Roberts criticized Sen. Barack Obama — who was born in Hawaii — for “going off this week to a vacation in Hawaii,” which she said “does not make any sense whatsoever.” Roberts stated: “I know his grandmother lives in Hawaii and I know Hawaii is a state, but it has the look of him going off to some sort of foreign, exotic place.” Roberts continued: “He should be in Myrtle Beach, and, you know, if he’s going to take a vacation at this time.”

Recap: It doesn’t make any sense to visit your grandmother in Hawaii, because some people think that Hawaii is a foreign country. (And some people probably think that Hawaii is populated by Muslims! Eek!) Thus, it is advisable to go to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina instead, because everyone knows that South Carolina is part of the United States. Furthermore, it is common knowledge that states that actually declared war against the United States are more American than states like Hawaii, which never declared war against the United States. If Hawaii is to become a respected part of the United States, first it must secede, seize federal property and attack the U.S. military; otherwise, it will continue to be an exotic wannabe state like Vermont (which might as well be France with its French-sounding capital and its homegrown socialists Ben and Jerry). Presidential candidates should avoid effete pretend-states like Hawaii and Vermont like the plague.

Cokie Roberts isn’t a high profile anchorwoman, but she is a relatively well-known political commentator. However, based on her aforementioned commentary, I wouldn’t be surprised if she were the anchorwoman for her class at Wellesley. Even John McCain came in 894 out of a class of 899 at the Naval Academy.

I think Cokie Roberts might be getting her talking points from the RNC. Just a hunch.

  2. Grace Chu Says:

On another note: Hawaii as a state = younger than McCain.

  3. Anna Says:

Did she get the name Cokie from her love of snorting coke? ‘Cause snorting coke is the only way to explain her “logic” on why Obama shouldn’t be visiting Hawaii.

I too find Roberts’ comments racist and offensive for its condescension, but I have to address some of your remarks about Hawai’i. Hawai’i was an independent, sovereign country with treaties and international recognition. In 1893, the US invaded and assisted a small group of white settlers in a coup d’etat. In 1993, the US apologized to Hawaiians for its illegal military intervention in the overthrow. In essence this was the first in a long line of “regime changes” committed by the US, the latest being Iraq. But overthrowing a legitimate government doesn’t mean America gained sovereignty over Hawai’i. No treaty, no annexation. The alleged referendum on statehood for Hawai’i violated international standards for self-determination established by the UN. In Hawai’i's case, American settlers in Hawai’i and even military personnel got to vote in determining Hawai’i's status. There is a Hawaiian movement seeking to regain their independence from US occupation. Just wanted you to know. Thanks.
