Dictionary Adds 100 New Words, Forgets “Nipple Confidence”

By Grace Gatsby

Get your Scrabble boards out, gals! Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary announced 100 new words they will be adding to the vernacular this year. With that in mind, I’d like to share with you some of the words that made the cut this time around that I think we may have been overlooking:

1. Dark energy:
Dictionary Definition (DD)- hypothetical form of energy that produces a force that opposes gravity and is thought to cause the accelerating expansion of the universe.

Grace The Spot Definition (GTS)- NOM. See also, Prop 8 Supporters.

2. Air quotes:
DD- gesture made by raising and flexing the index and middle fingers of both hands, used to call attention to a spoken word or expression.

GTS- gesture used when discussing parties of one’s entourage who have “broken up” or have gotten “back together.”

3. Kiteboarding
DD- the sport of riding on a small surfboard propelled across water by a large kite, to which the rider is harnessed.

GTS- the latest lesbian competitive sport to sweep the west coast. Board shorts are NOT optional.

4. Pretexting
DD- presenting oneself as someone else to obtain private information.

GTS- contacting a girlfriend, ex-girlfriend or member of one’s entourage to ensure their cell phone is powered on to plan a text message session. See also, planned conversations.

5. Infinity pool
DD- outdoor swimming pool with an edge over which water flows into a trough, but seems to flow into the horizon.

GTS – L Word Vortex located in Bette and Tina’s Pool. Ex: Jennifer Schecter disappeared into the infinity pool and has not been heard from since.

According to an article from USAToday.com, Peter Sokolowski, an editor-at-large for the publisher, told the Associated Press, “As soon as we see the word used without explanation or translation or gloss, we consider it a naturalized citizen of the English language. If somebody is using it to convey a specific idea and that idea is successfully conveyed in that word, it’s ready to go in the dictionary.”

So, although there are some good ones that have been added, I’d say by those standards we have some potential dictionary inductees used frequently right here at Grace The Spot to work with. These include but certainly are not limited to, the bisexual two-step, lesbian texting syndrome (LTS) and possibly the lesbian lexiconic holy grail: “It’s complicated.”

Surprisingly or not, those words were not to be found in this new edition. Quite an egregious oversight if you ask me, since they’re ignoring their core audience, the self-proclaimed queens of obscure insults, not to mention grammar.

But hell, by this time we could probs just make our own dictionary…clitionary? Was that vulgar? I’m sorry. Get to it ladies! What are some of your favorite lesbionic words/phrases that are 7 letters or less? We started off talking about Scrabble, remember. There’s a 50 point bonus at stake. I can hear those overly competitive engines revving already…

It’s more than seven letters, so it probably won’t count. The word is Sucluster and is used when the unlikely events its referring to happen around the same time.
